David Buley is an Associate Professor of Music Education in the Faculty of Education at Memorial University of Newfoundland, in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, as well as a member of the Faculty in the School of Theology at Thorneloe University. David enjoys his lengthy career of teaching classroom and private lessons in music, conducting choirs, accompanying for ballet companies and playing various instruments. He is a graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton. NJ, having studied with Alan Crowell, James Jordan, and Joseph Flummerfelt with degrees in Choral Conducting and Sacred Music. He also holds a PhD in Liturgical Studies from Drew University, studying there with Drs. Robin Leaver, Anne Yardley, James F. White, and the Rt. Rev’d Neil Alexander. David is a long-time member of, and sometime conductor for, And Wolf Shall Inherit the Moon, the Epilogue of R. Murray Schafer's Patria cycle. He has served as Music Director for performances of Schafer's Zoroaster produced by Soundstreams Canada, and The Enchanted Forest, and Princess of the Stars for Patria Music Theatre Productions. David has also conducted university opera productions, including Bernstein’s Candide, and Vaughan Williams’ Riders to the Sea, and led numerous choral singing tours to Europe and the U.S.A. His lengthy resumé includes work as Music Director of The Windsor Classic Chorale, (Windsor, Ontario) The Couchiching Young Singers (Orillia, Ontario), Saint George’s Round Church (Halifax, Nova Scotia) as well as of the Acadia University Chorus and the Acadia Vocal Ensemble – a semi-finalist in the CBC Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs. He is the founder of Ariadne Women’s Chamber Choir of Sudbury, (runners-up in the Ontario Music Festival Association Provincial Finals and a featured choir at Festival 500 in 2011) as well as Young Sudbury Singers – a choir for ages 7-19. He is also the founding artistic director of Octatonic Decadence ~ winners of the Canadian Federation of Music Festivals’ Richard W. Cooke Prize for best choral ensemble. He is the 2016 recipient of the Joan Mantle Music Trust Award, and was awarded the Sudbury Community Builders’ Award of Excellence for Education in 2017. A practitioner of Jaques-Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Dr. Buley offers workshops in music education, choral music and vocal technique, as well the worship arts, and enjoys numerous adjudicating experiences. He loves making music and spends quite a bit of time singing outdoors with the largest choir on earth.
